Music is a way of seeing, music is culture, music is part of humanity. in the documentary my music brain by National Geographic we took a closer look into this ideas and how music shapes and affects the human mind.
It all starts iwth a nuero scientists named Daniel Levitin. Dr.Levitin here has always been interested on how music affects the human brain even though e had run many experiemtns which showed people getting more dopamine based on music they liked or not, he always felt that the results weren’t sound enough. Not breakthorugh enough. It was always just informatio nwe already knew wouldn’t even realizing but he achieved the oppurtournity he wanted when Sting the musician accepted sting to be used as a test subject of Dr.Levitin.
But how do we hear music. The way it works is how by a single vibration in the air our ears bells vibrates to it and sends signals to our brain. from here the brain runs test to seee what the sound is and from here it continues to get notes and recompile them to get what we hear «music».
So what is the test of Dr.Levitin with the grand musician Sting you may ask. Well this consists of Levitin mentioning a song name to Sting and Sting would try to play the song on his brain. Thanks to machines Levitin would see the activity in the brain to see waht parts activate.
Enough with tests what about dancing? Dancing is part of every culture. but every cultures has different dances why? becuase every culture has different music. In india they have complex symphony’s and rythms, compare that to mexico light motifs and a more average pace. with this indians find mexican music alien and liekwise forthe mexican for the indian. there just not used to it. but thanks to this the more and more famililar you find a song the more more you might want to dance to it. the way this works is that dopamine releases when we dance making nuerons in our brain fire off rapidly. This believe it or not makes many new nueron in the brain for memories and that being said music is one of the last thing we forgot when we have illnesses such as alzhiemers’s.
even though its still a mystery we us huamns are the only creature with the capability to make complex music we certainly do use it right.
